Found Mold?

If you’re reading this, chances are you’re dealing with mold in your home.

Don’t panic!

There are things you can do to reduce its impact until you are able to remediate.

Tip 1:  Isolate the Source

If you know where the mold is, seal off the room or space to minimize the spread.

Tip 2:  Improve Air Flow

Good airflow helps reduce humidity and can help dilute the concentration of mold spores circulating.

Here’s how to improve ventilation at home:

  • Exhaust fans: Use fans in bathrooms and kitchens. Make sure they’re venting to the outside.

  • Open windows: Open windows (weather permitting) for 15 minutes daily for a fresh air exchange.

  • Dehumidifiers: Keep indoor humidity below 50%. Use a room dehumidifier or a basement model if needed. Remember to empty the water tank!

Tip 3:  Air Filtration

Air filters can help reduce airborne mold spores:

  • For HVAC systems: Install a MERV 11 or 13 filter and replace it monthly.  Leave the unit fan set in the “ON” position to continually circulate the air.

  • For portable air purifiers: Place HEPA air purifiers in bedrooms, living rooms, or other high-use spaces. Consider making a simple DIY Box Fan Filter for about $50 to effectively clean the space.

— Avoid ozone generators! They can degrade materials in your home and create harmful byproducts like formaldehyde.

Tip 4: Clean

Mold can feed on dust, regular cleaning  helps lower the load.

  • Dust weekly using a microfiber cloth.

  • Vacuum 1–3 times per week using a HEPA-certified vacuum to capture fine particles and spores.

  • Use safe cleaners:  Good options include Benefect Decon 30, Concrobium, EC3, hydrogen peroxide, and white vinegar.  Avoid bleach, it is highly toxic and only removes the staining from mold it does not remove the actual spores.

Tip 5: Laundry

  • Wash bedding weekly, including pillowcases.

  • Declutter closets—less fabric means fewer places for mold and dust to cling.

  • Wash bathroom curtains regularly.
